Hawthorne then divulges to Clara that they are at war with the the Land of Amusements, which they now refer to as "the Fourth Realm." Watching a ballet that tells the story of the world's creation, Sugar Plum explains to Clara that her mother created this world as a young girl. Captain Philip then guides Clara to the palace, where she meets The Sugar Plum Fairy, regent of the Land of Sweets Shiver, regent of the Land of Snowflakes and Hawthorne, regent of the Land of Flowers. Captain Philip and Clara cross the bridge, but they are unable to obtain the key from the mice. Unable to reach the mouse which crosses a frozen-over lake, Clara approaches Captain Philip Hoffman, who tells her that she is the daughter of Queen Marie Stahlbaum, to cross the bridge he is guarding, which leads to the Fourth Realm. Nonetheless, before she can grab it, a mouse snatches it. Clara finds her string with her name on it, signifying her gift, and follows it into a parallel world to Christmas Tree Forest, where the key hangs in the center of a tree waiting for her to grab. Calling him self-absorbed and obsessed with his family's image since his wife's passing, she flees the group when Drosselmeyer announces it being time for the children to receive their gifts. Returning to the ballroom, Clara gets scolded by her father for disobeying him and not dancing with him. He then reveals to Clara that the egg was a creation of his that he gifted to Clara's mother when she was younger, and that her mother's wish was to bestow the gift to her daughter. Refusing to dance with her father, Clara scurries from the crowd to ask Drosselmeyer, a skilled engineer, how to unlock her egg. The Stahlbaum family then heads to a Christmas Eve ball, hosted by the children's godfather, Drosselmeyer. In the package, she discovers a note from her mother that states that the inside of the egg contains all she would ever need. Clara, the youngest sister, receives a handcrafted egg-shaped box, which, to her dismay, she is unable to unlock. Stahlbaum gives his children Christmas presents to fulfill his wife's dying wish. In London, England one Christmas Eve, Mr. Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Drosselmeyer delivers his gifts to each child he is hosting, Clara crosses the boundary of a world created by her mother, where Clara is a princess, and ruled by the regents of the realms Land of Snowflakes, Land of Flowers, and Land of Sweets that protect them from Mother Ginger, who is the tyrant of the Fourth Realm in the beginning of an adventure full of fantasy and betrayal. The family goes to the ball promoted by Clara's godfather Drosselmeyer, who is also a man of science, to spend the night and she asks him for the key. Stahlbaum delivers a gift left by Marie for each sibling and Clara receives an egg-shaped locked box without a key to open it. The family misses their mother and wife Marie Stahlbaum, who was also a scientist and has recently passed away. In Victorian England, teenager Clara is a young scientist that lives with her older sister Louise, her younger brother Fritz, and her widower father Mr. He sends Clara back upstairs with the promise of meeting up with her shortly. After helping him fix one of his latest inventions, Drosselmeyer examines Clara's egg and tells her that she is the only one clever enough to open it. Clara disobeys her father and seeks Drosselmeyer's workshop. Stahlbaum sternly forbids Clara to wander off by herself, since he has promised both of his daughters a dance during the festivities. The Stahlbaum family arrive at Drosselmeyer's mansion and Mr. As Louise helps her younger sister prepare for their godfather Drosselmeyer's (Morgan Freeman's) annual holiday gala, she notices her godfather's initials on the detailing and realizes that Drosselmeyer might know how to open it. Stahlbaum (Matthew Macfadyen) bestows each of the children a gift from their late mother: Marie's favorite gown for Louise, a set of toy soldiers for Fritz, and a mysterious egg-shaped contraption for Clara with a note telling her that "everything she needs is inside." Clara attempts to open the box, but realizes that the key to unlocking the contraption is missing. This movie begins after the passing of Marie Stahlbaum (Anna Madeley) as her husband and children Louise (Ellie Bamber), Clara (Mackenzie Foy), and Fritz (Tom Sweet) attempt to celebrate the holiday in the midst of such tragedy. On Christmas Eve, citizens of Victorian London are celebrating the arrival of the holiday.
